The first prison in Russia for those sentenced to life terms. A single cell. “Prisoner Boris Bezotechestvo. Life sentence. Article 102. Triple murder.” Communing with a God who is indifferent to his fate. He prays, but is NOT A BELIEVER. His words filled the air of the cell. He talks and listens to himself. The space within the cell consumes him. His world is four walls and the view from the window. The prison physically thrusts the prisoner into TIME. A long succession of days and nights allotted to him, after which comes “hell” or “heaven”.

2) DHARAVI: SLUM FOR SALE

At the heart of the continuously growing metropolis of Mumbai lies Dharavi, the largest slum in India. Close to a million immigrants from all over the country live and work here, contributing a vital share to the city's economy. This former marshland has now turned into prime real estate as Mukesh Mehta, urban planner and consultant to the government’s Dharavi Redevelopment Project, attempts to usher in a new twist in Mumbai's slum rehabilitation policies. In the wake of this impending destruction, the film questions the very nature and benefit of development, as it follows the struggle between tradition and modernity. It is the fight of the underprivileged to defend their homes and livelihoods against mounting pressures of globalisation.

3) FIGURES OF THOUGHT

A film about three of India’s leading visual artists, Bhupen Khakar, Nalini Malani and Vivan Sundaram. The film takes, as its point of departure, a glass mural on which all three artists were working, then zeros in on each of them. It links them to their physical and mental worlds through cinematic devices like associative sounds, variable light and montage. Compositionally, the visuals aim to match with the styles of each artist, as well as the larger narrative traditions of India.

4) THE 4TH REVOLUTION Energy Autonomy

Possibly the most inspirational, solutions-based environmental film out there, the documentary travels the world to examine best practices on four continents - that put much of the rest of the world to shame. We get quality time with impressive people doing good work that we can all learn from. They join others in making a convincing case that, in less than 30 years, the world could derive 100 percent of its energy from renewable sources. Changing our reliance on fossil fuels could not only slow climate change, but also promote sustainable economic development and social justice around the globe.

5) WORKERS - ROUTES OF THE GLOBALIZATION
Directed by: TOMMASO D’ELIA; English (subtitled), 52 min, 2010, Italy
Safety is our motto. This is the sign towering over the entrance to the port of Alang. With its 127 shipyards, Alang in Gujarat is the world’s largest ship breaking port. Here, every day, around 80,000 workers strip down the metal carcasses of massive vessels. Often using their bare hands or rudimentary tools. Always without the support of medical services. Asbestos, dioxins, exhausted oils: many of the ships arriving here contain toxic or radioactive substances. Accidents are a daily occurrence, with about 300 deaths a year. Our journey among Indian workers begins here and continues in the cotton and sugarcane fields of Gujarat, among the peasants of Bengal forced by violence and murder to sell their lands to Western multinationals. The workers voices are intertwined with the ones of trade union leaders and authoritative intellectuals.

1) VERANDAH : Direction: Anoodha Kunnath

A young girl, brought up away from Kerala (her birthplace), grapples with her relationship to her mother tongue. She is prone to imagination and constantly tries to personify the elusive language. By trying to give it a face, she hopes to come to terms with the fact that it has made her stand out from the people she wanted to be a part of.

She visits Kerala for her vacations and when her uncle tells her of a long ago incident, she weaves stories in her mind from the characters he talks of. Her isolation and loneliness reflects in the characters she interacts with and imagines.

2) ‘A dream called America’; Direction: Anoop Sathyan; Duration: 24 Min

It is a documentary made on Shahbaz, a 15 year old boy from Gujarat, India. He is the third among the five children of his father Aftab who makes a living by repairing cycles on a footpath. Shahbaz had studied in the US for a year on a scholarship, where he was hosted by an American couple. The one year he spent in US changed his attitude as he experienced a very comfortable and carefree life than his real home. After reaching India, he badly wants to go back and settle in US, leaving his parents in a dilemma.

3) “KEY”: Direction: Bharat Parmar; Duration: 28 min

Loosing keys must be common experience of all of us. This is what this film is trying to capture. It tells different stories of loosing keys and finding a way out. It explores the nature of helplessness and extreme dependence in emergencies.
All the stories revolve around one key maker who makes duplicate keys in emergencies.

4) 7th Sense: Director: Farooq Mohamed; Duration: 33: 26

Who is really blind? The film sets out to explore the lives of Mancharam - a physiotherapist, LC - a worker in an incense stick factory, Subhash - a liftman & Laxman - a petty shop owner-all residents of a hostel for the blind. Away from their actual home, they bring in togetherness with like people in their new one is this Hostel which provides shelter for these four and more.

5) CIPHER: Director: George K Antoney; Runtime: 23m 30s

The film is a suspense drama involving 5 different stories from different stratas of the society. Shiva inherits a “mysterious suitcase” after his father’s death. Guna, a thief who turned into an actor gets his first dialogue scene ever. Vikram, a driver who is desperately in need of money to repay his loan is ready to do anything to get that money. Kishan, a crippled cobbler is in a self destructive mode as he is frustrated with life and to add salt to wound, Johnson an annoying kid keeps irritating him. Rayudu a Business man also has his eye on the mysterious suitcase. These seemingly disconnected lives are crisscrossed by the path of the suitcase putting them through the darkest moments of their lives.

6) Sultangunj: Direction: Hari Udayakumar; Duration: 15mins

A riot hit town, Sutangunj which is no more a place to live in or trusted in. Two friends accused of a crime, Mani & Selvan. A victimized father and daughter, Khalid & Sakina. All of them are on a run to their only hope of escape, reaching the highway on Sunrise. At the crossroads, choices were to be made, relations to be chosen, face betrayal, hatred, love and finally, meet the wrath of their own destiny as they continue fighting the other worldly evils.

7) ‘Budhan Diaries’ by K. Harish Singh; Duration: 24 min

Budhan theatre is a theatre group based in Chharanagar in Ahmedabad, India. What makes this group different from other theatre groups is the fact that it is run by ‘Chharas’. Chharas are a tribe which were regarded as ‘Born Criminals’ by the British and later they were given the status of a DNT (Denotified and Notorious Tribe), because of their involvement in theft, liquor making and other such crimes. The film follows three members of the theatre group talking and getting to know more about the theatre group. This film is a journey which the director takes to know more about the group’s functioning in the community. It gets into questions and answers of Budhan theatre’s existence.

8) Poka: Direction: Ishanee Sarkar

Sumon is a little boy who is kept imprisoned in his room by a woman who could be his mother. His reality and nightmares are intermingle and makes us question what is really happening. The film is a non-liner mood piece and is open to different interpretations.

9) THE OCEAN: Direction: Malhar Salil; Duration: 27:53 min

This is a story about an educated (but preoccupied in chores) ,house-wife Saroj. She argues with her son Manna about the beauty in alphabets he is unable to comprehend. It is a story about Manna's father who talks about the problem of a livelihood, but is not able to reciprocate or understand the real deal in his own life. Manna craves to !nd the pearl for his mother...he does not know what a "Pearl" is? A !sher boy is lost in fables about his Mamu's Hero-isms and the lake.

Mamu talks about the wonderous lake of Bhopal. Everyone has their take on life. This is a !lm about two metaphors, the metaphor of the Sea (samudra) and the Pearl (moti). They metaphorically create endless angles in the story.

10) 'The Creeper, the alien & other stories' : Direction: Sandhya Ramachandran

'The Creeper, the alien & other stories' is a fascinating journey through the collection of objects of one man. Ashish Lakhia- documentary filmmaker, writer and artist- has been collecting quirky odds and ends for a really long time. His collection through the ages has built up to fill his entire house, so much so that, he doesn't know what to do with it now. Amidst rotting newspapers and fading paints, bizarre and beautiful objects pop up- full of stories behind them, tales as fantastic as the man that owns them!

THE LIGHTNING TESTIMONIES

Why is one image different from the other? Why does an image seem to contain many secrets? What can release them so as to suddenly connect with many unknown lives. The Lightning Testimonies reflects upon a history of conflict in the Indian subcontinent through experiences of sexual violence. As the film explores this violence, there emerge multiple submerged narratives, sometimes in people, images and memories, and at other times in objects from nature and everyday life that stand as silent but surviving witnesses. In all narratives the body becomes central - as a site for honour, hatred and humiliation and also for dignity and protest.

Gandhi was born on the 2nd of October 1869 in the state of Gujarat. He was assassinated on 30th January 1948 in New Delhi. This short silent film is a homage to Gandhi, it is about his assassination and the massacres that happened just a few months ago .To Remember is about a gallery and the smell of death.

A NIGHT OF PROPHECY

Is it possible to understand the passage of time through poetry? And if that were so even for one special moment then would it be possible to see the future? The film travels in the states of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Nagaland and Kashmir trying to understand the past, the severity of conflict and the cycles of change. Through poetry you suddenly see where each and all the territories are heading to, where you belong and where to intervene, if you want to. The different poetic narratives merge together, allowing us to see a more universal language of symbols and meanings. The moment when this merger in the mind takes place is the simple moment of prophecy.

Baphlimali 173 is a film about the resistance movement of the Kashipur tribals in South Orissa against bauxite mining and aluminum companies. It is a film about globalisation and tribal consciousness, a brief glimpse into an 8 year long struggle that is pushing out powerful Indian and international companies from the tribal lands in the Eastern Ghats in Orissa, India.

FREEDOM is a documentary film about nature and captivity, about working people resisting an onslaught on their livelihoods, about democracy, profit and the sound of the rain. From the British colonial empire to the globalisation of today, from the anti mining tribal resistance in Kashipur and Gandhmardhan in Orissa, the mass movements in Chattisgarh to the coastal communities in their struggle againt big ports and industrial parks in Kutch and Umbergaon, - the film FREEDOM documents and presents insights into many different peoples struggles in India.

1) Retrospective section: Renowned film makers Saba Dewan and Rahul Roy will be felicitated during the festival under the retrospective section. Their best films (5 each) will be screened. They will be present on 7,8,9 December to present their films and take part in the discussion following the screenings.

12th Madurai Film Festival: SARAT CHANDRAN MEMORIAL AWARD COMPETITION

We invite entries from Tamil documentaries and short films produced after 2008 on issues dealing with human rights issues and peoples' struggles.

Documentaries and Short films made about Tamil speaking people all over the world or issues dealing with Tamilnadu can be sent. Films should be originally made in Tamil; they should not be dubbed or subtitled in Tamil from other languages.

Entry fee: Rs.500/- (demand draft taken in the name of R.Amudhan payable at Madurai)
Last date: 20 November 2010

First prize: Rs.10,000/-
Second prize: Rs.5,000/-

Dear friends

Greetings from MARUPAKKAM.

We are happy to inform you that we are planning to organise our 12th Madurai International Documentary and Short Film Festival 2010 on 7 -11 December 2010 at The Madura College, Madurai.

We are organising the festival in association with Media Research Centre, Department of Philosophy, The Madura College, Madurai along with our supporting organisations such as SIRD, EKTA, EVIDENCE, PEAL and IDEAS.

We are planning to screen around 100 short films, documentaries and animation films from within and outside India. It is a non-competitive festival* with no entry fee**.

Following will feature in our festival.

1) Retrospective Section: films by Saba Dewan and Rahul Roy
2) International Section
3) Rest of India
4) Films from Tamilnadu* (competition for Sarat Chandran Memorial Awards)
5) Country package: films from BURUNDI curated by Paul Lee, a film maker from Canada.
6) Under Construction: films distributed by Magic Lantern Foundation, New Delhi

Parallel art and literature events:

11th Madurai International Documentary & Short Film Festival 2009 -10

Dear Friends

The first phase of 11th Madurai International Documentary and Short Film Festival 2009-10 was organised by MARUPAKKAM on 15-19 December 2009 at The Madura College, Madurai in association with Media Research Centre, Department of Philosophy, The Madura College.

Dr. Karpaga Kumaravel, the Vice-Chancellor of Madurai Kamaraj University, inaugurated the festival on 15th December at 10 a.m. “Pandhi Bhojanam” a Malayalam short film directed by Sreebala K.Menon was screened as the inaugural film.

Around 80 films were screened in 5 days on two screens between 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. everyday. Around 500 people took part in the screenings. Documentaries and Short film were screened under the following six sections: Retrospective (films by Sanjay Kak), Country package (films from Kyrgyzstan curated by Paul Lee, presented by Cinema Development Fund, Kyrgyzstan), International films, Rest of India, Films from Tamilnadu and Under Construction (films distributed by Magic Lantern Foundation, New Delhi). Discussions were held after almost every screening.

Filmmakers K.P.Sasi, Sarat Chandran, Sreebala K.Menon, Kutti Revathi, Manohar, and K.Jayamurugan participated in the festival and screened their films.

Interactions with writers were organised every after noon. Writers Kutti Revathi, Samayavel, Jayabaskaran, Sureshkumar Indrajith, and Sa.Tamilselvan participated in the discussions.

Painting and Photo exhibition was organised along with the festival for 5 days. Artists Arasan, Balu, M.G. Rafeeq Mohammed, James Peter, Babu, Senthil, Siva and Ibrahim and the photographer Senthil exhibited their works.

V.M.S.Subhagunarajan, a theatre activist cum publisher and Yadhaarthaa Rajan, a film society activist took part in the closing ceremony along with Dr.Murali, Head of the Department, Department of Philosophy, The Madura College participated in the closing ceremony on 19th Decemeber 2009 at 5 p.m.

“Valli thirumanam” a mythological music theatre performance was presented by traditional artists Munirajan and company on 19th December 2009 at 6 p.m. as part of the closing ceremony.

The second and third phases of the festival will be held between January and June of 2010 that include screenings at various colleges, public halls, street corners, villages and small towns in and around Madurai in association with educational institutions, voluntary organisations, trade unions, theatre and film groups, and interesting and interested individuals.

The festival is supported by ZINDABAD Trust, New Delhi. IDEAS and EVIDENCE also supported the festival.

Madurai Film Festival Travels!

As Madurai Film Festival has successfully completed its 10th edition, it is now traveling across south India to share its collection of films.

As per the understanding and agreement with the filmmakers who had submitted their films to 10th Madurai International Documentary and Short Film Festival 2008, MARUPAKKAM is taking initiative to take the films from the selected list to non-commercial screenings across south India.

To start with VIBGYOR film festival of Thirussur, Kerala has invited us to be part of the 2009 edition to be held on 4-8 of February this year. It will be mentioned as “MADURAI FILM FESTIVAL PACKAGE curated by MARUPAKKAM” in VIBGYOR 2009. The number of films and final list of the films will be announced soon.

Talks are on with more festivals and groups across south India.

10th Madurai International Documentary and Short Film Festival 2008

Inaugurated at MUTA Hall (a trade union office) on 3rd December 2008 at 5 p.m. the festival traveled to multiple venues successfully and finally concluded at D.P. HALL in Tamilnadu Theological Seminary, Madurai on 7th December 2008 at 5 p.m.More than 100 films were screened at various venues including colleges, suburbs and villages in and around Madurai.

There were international films, Indian films and films from Tamilnadu. There were documentaries, short films, docu-fictions, experimental films and animation films. There were point of view films, abstract films, personal and reflective films, activist films, ethnographic films, poetic films, observational films and many more.

We recieved films under 7 categories. First 3 categories (FILMS FROM TAMILNADU, REST OF INDIA & INTERNATIONAL FILM) were put through selection processes. Our friends here including artists, filmmakers, students, teachers and activists formed the selection committees and selected the films. Another 3 were packages curated by friends like Paul Lee (CANADA PACKAGE), Sarat Chandran (KERALA PACKAGE) and Magic Lantern Foundation (UNDER CONSTRUCTION). The last but not the least, retrospective section was curated by the respective filmmakers.

Anand Patwardhan and Deepa Dhanraj presented their films under their respective retrospective collections.

Approximately more than 1500 people watched the films. Students, teachers, writers, artists, workers, professionals, business people and farmers were part of the wide range of audiences.Discussions followed each screenings which were based on form, content and context of the films.

The total budget was approximately Rs.50,000/- which we mobilized through donations from friends and friendly organisations. We also collected a little donation from the audiences.

We thank all the filmmakers, curators, volunteers, co-organisers, educational institutions, voluntary organisations, trade unions, artist groups and general public for participating in the festival.

Our journey continues.

10th Madurai Film Festival 2008 - New Features

Apart from our regular film sections like Retrospective, Films from Tamilnadu, Rest of India, International films and Under Construction (films distributed by Magic Lantern Foundation, New Delhi) following sections have been added to our 10th Madurai International Documentary and Short Film Festival 2008.

1) Country Package: This will feature contemporary short films and documentaries from a particular country every year. We are happy that films from Canada will be screened under this section this year. Our friend Paul Lee, a filmmaker from Canada has agreed to curate the package.

2) State Package: This will feature a collection of films every year from a particular state in India. We are happy that films from Kerala will be screened under this section this year. Our friend Sarat Chandran, a filmmaker from Kerala has agreed to curate the package.

3) A one day Seminar on Tamil documentaries and short films will be organised as part of the 10th Madurai Film Festival 2008. Our friend R.R.Srinivasan, a filmmaker from Tamilnadu has agreed to design and coordinate the seminar. Veteran film society activist Yadhartha Rajan has agreed to financially support the seminar.

4) Art festival: Photo and painting exhibitions, music and theatre performances will be organised along with the screenings of documentaries and short films during the festival at the main venue.

Greetings from Marupakkam, a media action group based in Madurai involved in organizing regular film screenings, film festivals and video workshops. We also make documentaries.

As you all know very well, we have been organizing an annual documentary film festival in and around Madurai since 1998. We are happy to inform you that our next edition i.e. 10TH MADURAI INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY AND SHORT FILM FESTIVAL 2008 will take place on 26-30 November 2008.

The idea behind the festival is to create a platform for documentary and short filmmakers to reach out to audiences of Madurai and in turn to facilitate an international film festival for our audience.

The MADURAI INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY AND SHORT FILM FESTIVAL is being organized by Marupakkam, in association with educational institutions, voluntary organizations, film societies, theatre groups, cultural groups and other likeminded individuals of Madurai. The screenings will take place in colleges, villages and various auditoriums.

The festival is a non-competitive one with no entry fee. There is no specific theme for our festival. Any film that is produced anywhere in the world during the last 24 months (approximately) in any language, in any format, in any style is welcome. The films that are not in Tamil should have English sub-titles. The screening format is DVD. Kindly allow us to keep the DVD’s for our further non-commercial screenings in and around Madurai. Ours is a non-funded festival, completely organized with donations and volunteer support.

The festival will have following sections: 1) INTERNATIONAL 2) REST OF INDIA – films made outside Tamilnadu 3) FILMS FROM TAMILNADU 4) UNDER CONSTRUCTION - films distributed by Magic Lantern foundation, New Delhi 5) RETROSPECTIVE 6) SPECIAL PACKAGE – documentaries and short films from Kerala.

We are happy to inform you that senior filmmakers Anand Patwardhan and Deepa Dhanraj have agreed for their retrospective (5 films each) as part of our 10TH MADURAI INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY AND SHORT FILM FESTIVAL 2008. As our previous festivals Magic Lantern Foundation, New Delhi has also agreed to share 10 films from their Under Construction package. Our special package – a new addition, will feature 10 films from Kerala. Sarat Chandran of Third Eye Communications, Kochi has agreed to help us to curate the package. There will be a seminar on Tamil documentaries as part of our festival. R.R.Srinivasan of Kaanchani Thiraipada Iyakkam, Tirunelveli has agreed to coordinate the proceedings.

Interested film makers are requested to send their entries under first 3 sections only. The last date to send the entry is 15 September 2008. Our selection committee comprising of senior filmmakers, writers, artists, activists, film students and fans will announce their recommendation on the list of films to be screened, on 15 October 2008. We will screen only the films as per the recommendations.

10th Madurai Film Festival 2008 - Retrospective Section

We are happy to announce that 10th Madurai International Documentary and Short Film Festival 2008 will screen documentaries of veteran filmmakers ANAND PATWARDHAN and DEEPA DHANRAJ under the retrospective section.

Both Anand Patwardhan and Deepa Dhanraj do not need introduction to documentary filmmakers and fans as they have been consistently making political documentaries for more than four decades. Apart from winning several national and international awards their films have been used by human rights groups, women's groups, educational and media institutions and of course film societies. Thier films have been instrumental in raising debates and discussions apart from being campaign materials in the various social and political movements for change.

We are very proud to screen their films under the retrospective section of 10th Madurai International Documentary and Short Film Festival 2008.

Retrospective section

We will be screening best five films each of Madhusree Dutta and R.V.Ramani during our 9th Madurai documentary and short film festival 2007 as part our retrospective section.

Both filmmakers are veterans in documentary field and are known for their experiments with form as well as dealing with interesting and innovative themes.

Madhusree Dutta is based in Mumbai. She is associated with Majlis, a cultural activist group.

R.V.Ramani is based in Chennai. He is also one of the most respected camera persons for documentary in India.

We are happy to screen their retrospective to express our respect and acknowledgement to their contribution to Indian documentary.

Dear Friends

Greetings from Marupakkam. There is a slight change in the dates of our 9th Madurai Film Festival 2007.

It has been decided by the organising committee consisting of 20 groups, institutions and organisations that the 9th Madurai documentary and short film festival 2007 will take place on 5-9 ofDecember 2007.

The inaugural function will take place on 5 December 2007 at Edward Victoria Hall at 6 p.m. senior writers, activists and filmmakers will be invited to inaugurate the festival.

The screenings will take place in the following colleges in Madurai.
1) American College 2) Lady Doak College 3) Madura College 4) Arul Anandhar College.

Few more colleges may join the list.

Besides, screenings in the open field in the following 5 villages also have been planned in association with voluntary organisations and groups. 1)Usilampatti (SIRD) 2)Thirupuvanam (SAND) 3)Perungudi(KOODU)4)EKTA 5)PEAL

Main screenings will take place at Tamilnadu Theological Seminary and MUTA Hall during all the 5 days.

Our selection committee meeting is on during all the week ends of October to select the films to be screened at the festival. We have invited filmmakers, writers, activists, artists, film society friends, teachers and students from Madurai to form the selection committee.

I would like to remind the filmmakers who have forgotten to send their films to our festival. Also Iwould like request them to send their latest films and support the festival which has been consistently taking films to the people for the past 8 years.

Greetings from Marupakkam, a media action group based in Madurai involved in organising regular screenings, video workshops and film festivals since 1996. We also make documentaries.

We are happy to inform you that our 9th Madurai Film Festival will be organised on 5-9 December 2007 in Madurai. The festival is jointly organised by 15 organisations including educational institutions, voluntary organisatons, media groups and film societies.

The festival will be a non-competitive one with no entry fee. There is no limit for duration of the films. Short films and documentaries produced after January 2006 are eligible to take part in the festival.

The films in non-tamil, non-English language should have subtitles in English. Films will be screened under three sections: Tamil 2) Rest of India 3) Foreign Films.

We invite the film makers to send their entries on DVD format with synopsis, filmography, stills, posters and other publicity materials on or before 30 September 2007.

A Selection committee consisting of filmmakers, writers, teachers, activists, artists and students will select the best 80 films in total (including Tamil, Rest of India and Foreign short films and documentaries) to be screened in 10 venues. The selection committee’s recommendation will be declared on 31 October 2007.

Festival will not return the dvd’s as they will be used for further non-commercial screenings in and around Madurai, India.

We also have a retrospective section under which 10 best films (5 each) of two veteran documentary film makers will be screened. Besides, Magic Lantern Foundation from New Delhi will screen 10 films from their Under Construction collection.
